Isaac Gutierrez For Born Loser Magazine: To start things off, can you tell us a bit about yourself?
Wilson Hernandez: My name is Wilson. I like writing songs and drinking wine in alleys.
BL: What did you grow up listening to?
WH: A lot of light rock stuff from the radio my mom was really into Billy Joel and stuff like that
BL: When did you first become interested in music?
WH: I probably started writing songs when I was about fourteen. When I was twelve I really wanted to learn drums but I got a guitar for Christmas instead
BL: You made me a playlist that had a ton of great spanish songs. How do you think that being able to explore music in spanish and english has influenced you?
WH: It basically doubles the amount of variety in my musical life. I always thought being bi-lingual was cool but I really learned to appreciate and embrace it the last couple of years. It pushed me to write songs in Spanish and even releasing a record on a Spanish label.
BL: What is the Joplin music scene like?
WH: It was quiet a few years ago but a lot of people around here have built up a little diy scene. There's a couple of cool house show spots so every month there's always some gigs to show up to. Another great thing is a lot of younger kids have been starting bands which is super important
BL: Talk to us a bit about your latest EP Last Sunday.
WH: Last Sunday was just a set of short songs that I wrote during the end of the summer. I was going through a hard time and it was just a good outlet for me. I'm known for writing short songs but I wanted to push it further and write songs that were less than a minute long
to make a 5 minute album
BL: Did you record and produce everything yourself?
WH: Not at all It was all mixed and recorded by my friend on her multi-track she's kind of a genius at that kind of stuff so I feel super lucky to have worked worth her.
BL: Did you write these songs specifically for the EP or were they something that you hadn’t been able to use in other projects?
WH: They were definitely songs written for a specific EP. There's a lot of songs that don't fit the vibe of my band Tennis Club so I just release those under my name.
BL: Do you have a favorite song on the EP?
WH: Stoli Soda Sprite!
BL: What motivates you or pushes you to grow as an artist?
WH: Being surrounded by people that have the same goal. When I see all my friends around me writing and playing music it's a really good feeling like "wow, we're here, we're doing it and this who we are" My main motivation is to one day be able to travel as much as possible
BL: What do you like to do when you’re not working on music or playing shows?
WH: I love to sleep!
I like hanging with my friends, going to shows, thrifting, doing spin cycle , reading and def trying new food
BL: What can we expect to see from you in the near future?
WH: I'm recording two more solo singles with a little diy label in Argentina and then I'm gonna be working on a new Tennis Club album. After that maybe a little tour or two? We will see !
BL: Is there anything you want our readers to know?
WH: Thanks for reading this and supporting artists. Uhhh don't vote Republican
